What it is about

Sylvia Plath’s only novel follows Esther Greenwood through professional promise, social expectation, depression, hospitalization, and uncertain recovery. Its sharp first-person voice moves between deadpan comedy and suffocating estrangement, making ambition, gender, sexuality, medical authority, and psychic pain part of the same constricted atmosphere. It stays near me because the part of human life that does not become clear just because I explain it should not become an idea I can praise from a safe distance.
