The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

John Gottman; Nan Silver

I keep this at #45 because the most research-grounded relationship manual on conflict, friendship, repair, and durable partnership. It keeps making the shelf ask more of me.

The long version

John Gottman and Nan Silver translate longitudinal research on couples into a practical model of marital friendship, conflict, repair, shared meaning, and destructive interaction patterns. The seven principles emphasize knowing one another, turning toward bids, accepting influence, managing solvable and perpetual problems, and building a life with shared purpose. I keep coming back because the question becomes more honest when it reaches my own life.

Why it is here

It is the shelf’s most behaviorally concrete relationship manual. The exercises make affection, responsiveness, repair, and conflict habits observable, while the research orientation offers a useful counterweight to advice based only on intuition. I want to carry one useful thing from it into the next difficult moment.

How to read it

Work through one exercise weekly, not in a single marathon. Track bids and repairs before attempting major conflict conversations. Use the material for mutual observation, never as a scorecard against a partner; unsafe relationships require specialized support. I will mark the places that make me defensive or relieved.

What it taught me

  1. 01

Contempt, criticism, defensiveness, and stonewalling predict relational deterioration.

  2. 02

Small responses to bids for connection accumulate into trust or distance.

  3. 03

Many conflicts are perpetual and require dialogue and accommodation rather than final resolution.
