Why Does He Do That?
I put this at #47 because Bancroft moves the question away from what anger made him do and toward the beliefs, benefits, choices, and control that keep abuse working. It belongs before the broader feminist history because safety needs a plain answer before theory.
The long version
Lundy Bancroft draws on years of work with abusive men to explain coercive control from the inside of its beliefs and rewards. He challenges explanations that make alcohol, anger, childhood pain, or loss of control the cause of abuse. The central issue is entitlement: the expectation that a partner’s attention, freedom, labour, body, and reality should be organized around him. The book describes warning signs, manipulation, the effect on children, separation risk, and the limits of promises that are not joined to sustained accountability.
Why it is here
This gives the relationship shelf a necessary boundary. Not every conflict is an attachment cycle to repair together, and better communication cannot make coercive control safe. I keep it high because naming the difference can matter more than understanding the abuser sympathetically.
How to read it
Read for patterns, not for a home diagnosis after one bad argument. Keep the sections on safety and children close, and do not confront a potentially abusive person with the book as a test. If the material fits a real danger, use specialist local support and a safety plan.
What it taught me
- 01
Abuse is a pattern of power and entitlement, not simply an episode of anger.
- 02
Apology and apparent insight are not evidence of change without long-term accountable behaviour.
- 03
Leaving can increase danger, so safety planning should respect the knowledge and choices of the person being harmed.
