The long version
Hans Rosling, with Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling Rönnlund, uses global data to challenge systematic errors in how people perceive development. The book identifies instincts that exaggerate gaps, negativity, fear, size, and urgency, then offers habits for comparing groups, checking denominators, finding trends, and resisting dramatic single stories. I return to it when I need a book that makes the forces moving underneath public life before they become impossible to ignore personal again.
Why it is here
It improves statistical and moral perspective without asking you to deny real suffering. The strongest lesson is methodological: better decisions require distributions, rates, historical comparison, and proportional attention—not whichever crisis produces the most vivid image. I want to carry one useful thing from it into the next difficult moment.
How to read it
Recreate several charts from current primary data and note which findings have changed. For every dramatic claim, ask: compared with what, over what period, for whom, and measured how? Preserve the habits even when specific statistics become outdated. I will mark the places that make me defensive or relieved.
