Sexual Politics
I put this at #49 because Millett makes politics visible inside sex, family, literature, and ordinary ideas about masculinity and femininity. Later feminist books sharpen or reject parts of it, which is exactly why this one opens them.
The long version
Kate Millett argues that relations between women and men are political because power is distributed through family, sex, education, work, law, psychology, and culture. She reads influential male writers alongside social institutions to show how domination can be made erotic, natural, and intellectually respectable. Some readings and generalizations have been contested, but the book remains a foundational attempt to name patriarchy as a system rather than a collection of private disappointments.
Why it is here
This opens much of the gender shelf because later work develops, corrects, and argues with it. It gives The Beauty Myth and Backlash a deeper history, while its limits make room for the race, class, sexuality, and cultural differences that one account cannot hold.
How to read it
Keep two margins: one for the structure Millett makes visible and one for the claims that feel too broad. Read at least one literary passage she discusses, then compare her interpretation with your own. Finish by mapping which parts of sexual politics changed and which merely changed vocabulary.
