The Sadeian Woman
I put this at #50 because Carter reads Sade without accepting the easy choice between censorship and celebration. She asks whether pornography can expose the bargains made around sex, power, and freedom, then refuses to let provocation stand in for liberation.
The long version
Angela Carter reads the Marquis de Sade as a pornographer who exposes, often brutally, the economic and political bargains hidden inside sexual life. She refuses both a simple defence of transgression and a simple claim that explicit representation is automatically liberating. Women in Sade’s world may become objects, victims, collaborators, or agents, but none steps outside power merely by reversing who dominates. Carter uses the extremity to ask what freedom would require beyond adopting the master’s appetite.
Why it is here
This belongs between Sexual Politics and the old literary arguments about obscenity. Carter is sharper than Sade because she keeps asking who pays for a fantasy of freedom. I keep it as a difficult argument, not a settled feminist position.
How to read it
Read Carter’s claim before deciding whether Sade deserves rescue. Mark where description becomes endorsement and where your own disgust or fascination tries to end the argument early. Pair it with writers who question Carter’s exclusions and with fiction that gives the represented woman an interior life.
