The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business
I keep this at #62 because a comprehensive, practical vocabulary for value creation, markets, finance, systems, and decision-making. It earns its place every time the easy answer falls apart.
The long version
Josh Kaufman organizes a broad introduction to business around value creation, marketing, sales, delivery, finance, human behavior, systems, and decision-making. Rather than replacing specialist study or an MBA curriculum, it supplies a practical map of terms and mental models that help readers recognize how a business creates and loses value. It reminds me that how a decision becomes an offer, a system, or a life with consequences does not happen only to other people.
Why it is here
It is the business shelf’s orientation layer. The breadth helps you locate gaps quickly, connect functions that are often taught separately, and decide which area deserves deeper study before taking action. The test is whether it changes what I notice after I close the book.
How to read it
Skim the full map, then choose one live project and score each major function from one to five. Study the weakest area in depth, add a metric and one experiment, and use specialist sources before making legal, accounting, or investment decisions. I will keep a note of the sentences that make me want to look away.
What it taught me
- 01
A viable business must create, attract attention to, sell, deliver, and retain sufficient value.
- 02
Constraints and feedback loops often matter more than local optimization.
- 03
Pricing, cash flow, incentives, and uncertainty shape even apparently creative decisions.
